New Custom-Made Fretless Open Back Commission

I was contacted a short while ago to build a short scale fretless for someone who is keen on the Round Peak style of playing.

The banjo is made out of American Walnut and features a nickel-silver plate from the nut to just past the seventh fret.

This gives a nice playing surface and adds sustain to those lovely long slides synonymous with the style.

The fingerboard is out of one piece of ebony which was recessed to accommodate the plate. You can use 2-3 laminates, making the top laminate the same thickness of the plate. This is easier to do, but I think using one piece gives a cleaner line.

Binding on the pot and heel cap is cocobolo. This gives it a lovely understated contrast.
